Research Article Eric A. Walden Rawls College of Business Administration Texas Tech University and Tepper School of Business Carnegie Mellon University [email protected] Glenn J. Browne McIntire School of Commerce University of Virginia [email protected] Technology adoption often occurs sequentially, so that later potential adopters can see the decisions (adopt or not adopt) of earlier potential adopters. In this paper we review the literature on observational learning, in which people use information gained by observing the behavior of others to inform their decisions, and note that little prior research has used an observational learning perspective to understand the adoption of information technology. Based on theory and previous literature, we suggest that observational learning is likely to be common in adoption decisions. We develop a model that extends existing observational learning models and use simulation to test the model. The results suggest that following the behavior of other similarly-situated decision makers can be a very useful strategy in adoption situations in which there is a great deal of uncertainty. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

SEQUENTIAL ADOPTION THEORY: A Theory For Understanding Herding in Technology Adoption Decisions
Technology adoption often occurs sequentially, so that later potential adopters can see the decisions (adopt or not adopt) of earlier potential adopters. Here, we construct a model of the technology adoption decision where 1) adoption occurs sequentially, 2) each decision maker has some private information about the fitness of a technology, and 3) decision makers can see the decisions, but not ...
متن کاملEmpirical Study of Nova Scotia Nurses’ Adoption of Healthcare Information Systems: Implications for Management and Policy-Making
Background This paper used the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), which was extended, to investigate nurses’ adoption of healthcare information systems (HIS) in Nova Scotia, Canada. Methods Data was collected from 197 nurses in a survey and data analysis was carried out using the partial least squares (PLS) technique. Results In contrast to findings in prior studies that used TPB to investig...
متن کاملExplanation of Adoptive Families’ Experiences of Adopted Children Problems: a Grounded Theory Approach
Extended Abstract Introduction: Adoption of a child is a complex social construct that is often challenging and does not always result in immediate happiness. Children who are adopted, particularly those with a history of adversity prior to adoption, are at the risk of developing problems in behavioral and emotional self-regulation, attention deficits, or inhibitory control; as well as problem...

متن کاملExternalities, Incentives and Strategic Complementarities: Understanding Herd Behavior in Information Technology Adoption
Herd behavior arises in many instances of information technology (IT) adoption. This study examines the economic and behavioral bases for herd behavior and decision conformity. We investigate the roles of payoff externalities, observational learning and managerial incentives in influencing IT adoption decisionmaking. Our study underscores the benefits of viewing various drivers of IT adoption h...
